Modern Chant

Modern Chant: 1980s Alternative Rock Band Pioneering Electronic Experimentation

Formed in the early ’80s, Modern Chant became one of the pioneers of electronic experimentation, blending traditional rock instruments with cutting-edge digital technology.

Evolving from earlier lineups such as Ron Rude’s Piano Piano, and Autofax with drummer Helen Smart, Modern Chant features myself, Annie Watkins on vocals and keyboards, Dale Chant on saxophone, flute, and computer sequencing, and Marc Tracey on guitar.

Modern Chant offers a unique sound that sets us apart from other alternative rock bands of the era.

Our innovative fusion of electronic and traditional instruments emerged at a time when most bands stuck to either conventional instrumentation or completely electronic setups.

From 1983 to 1985, Modern Chant performed at iconic pubs and venues across Melbourne’s inner city, gaining a loyal following and helping to shape the evolving alternative rock scene.

With influences ranging from synth-pop to post-punk, Modern Chant retains its originality and relevance in the current music scene. My lyrics often highlight social and political concerns which still resonate today.
